Abstract
This July Vladimir Ivanovich Arnautov, Honoured Scientist of Moldova, Corresponding member
of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Moldova, Doctor habilitat, Professor, head of the
Department of Theoretical Mathematics of the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science,
has celebrated his 60th anniversary.
V.I. Arnautov was born on July 30, 1939 in the town of Bolgrad, Odessa Region. He entered the
Kishinev State University, the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, after finishing a secondary school
in Bolgrad in 1956, and graduated from the university with honours in 1961. In the same year
V.I. Arnautov began the postgraduate course at the new created Academy of Sciences of Moldova,
becoming the first postgraduate student of V.A. Andrunakievich, a world recognized mathematician,
Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Moldova.
He supported his Doctor thesis in 1965 and Doctor habilitat thesis in 1972, both at the Institute of
Mathematics of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (Novosibirsk).
Vladimir Ivanovich Arnautov is a distinguished specialist in topological algebra. His main results are
the following:
- resolving of the problem (known since 1946) on non-discrete Hausdorff topologization of an infinite ring, and namely, its positive solution for countable and for commutative-associative rings and the construction of an example of an infinite ring that does not admit a non-discrete Hausdorff ring topology;
- the study of the problem on extending the topology (pseudonorm) of a ring to some its super-ring (semigroup rings, ring of quotients);
- obtaining a criterion of the pseudo-normability of a topological ring, which generalizes all the sufficient conditions of the pseudo-normability obtained earlier by other authors;
- constructing the general theory of radicals of topological rings and the study of properties of some concrete radicals of topological rings.
V.I. Arnautov has published 3 monographs (one of them in the USA) and more than 70 scientific articles
(30 of them in Russian journals which are translated into English), including 5 surveys.
Many works on topological algebra contain references to works by V.I. Arnautov. In particular, some his
results have been included in monographs by S. Warner (USA), N. Shell (USA), W. Wieslaw (Poland) on
topological rings and fields.
V.I. Arnautov contributed very much to training specialists in mathematics. He supervised more then
13 Doctor theses (the first of them was supported in 1969, when the scientific adviser was a young
scientist). His postgraduate students were not only from Moldova, but also from other countries. One of his
disciples is a Doctor habilitat of Science now. For many years Vladimir Ivanovich has lectured on
topological algebra (special courses) at the State University of Moldova and has been the scientific adviser
of senior students (diploma works).
V.I. Arnautov has been a member of the Specialized Academic Board for conferring scientific degree at the
Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science for many years and at the Odessa State University from
1985 to 1989. He was a member of the Higher Certifying Commission of the USSR from 1980 to 1984
and of the Republic of Moldova from 1994 to 1997.
Rather vast is his public activity.
V.I. Arnautov was awarded the State Prize of Moldova for Youth in Science and Technology and
other decorations.
We wish Vladimir Ivanovich strong health, energy and new scientific achievements.
